How To Get Started
Your projects starts by deciding which rooms you
want to lay wood flooring in. Care should be
taken to make sure the underlying foundation
is ready for wood flooring. Any cracks,
indentations or bumps can cause your new
floor to look wavy. On peer-and-beam
foundations or plywood its important to make
sure the area is as level as possible, and
any decayed or damaged wood is replaced before
you start laying your floor.
Measure the Square Footage Needed for
Wood Flooring
Next, its time to measure the area to be
covered. For irregular shaped rooms always
get the square footage by divided the areas
up into easily calculated squares or
rectangles and then adding their footage
together to get an accurate total.
Most flooring is sold by the square foot.
The square footage is the actual measurement
of the area to be covered by flooring. A
waste factor of 5% must be added to the
amount of square footage of flooring needed
to allow for cutting waste. Example: a 10' x
10' room = 100 sq. ft. 5% of 100 is 5 so you
will have to purchase 105 sq. ft. in order
to have enough flooring. The cutting waste
also allows for some minor defects if any in
the wood to be cut out.
Measure the Number of Lineal Feet of
Trim
Not only will you want to lay new
flooring but you may decide to replace
the painted trim with a stained trim to
accent the flooring. Measure the length
of each wall that will require trim and
multiply the total by .05 to determine
the waste factor you will need to tell
your salesman this when you place your
order.
